Coaching tips for successful coaches

  • Have an open mind and always be willing to listen and learn
  • Put more stress on EFFORT than OUTCOME
  • FINISH your season with winning moments NOT just winning scores

Off Season Coaching Tips -

Wall Drills - Coaches encourage your players in the off season to maintain & continue to develop their skills with simple walls drills, it does not have to be "fancy" or "intense" but both the player and your team will benefit from "off season" training.
* The great benefit of this type of practicing is that enables you to train on your own and therefore does not have to be part of a structured squad practice.

* Additional training in your own spare time will soon rapidly improve your own performance as your confidence and ability increases.

* Personal improvement is an absolutely vital part in the development of your game

These Wall Drills should help you quickly develop better balance by 'keeping on your toes' and also get you to develop 'soft hands' when receiving and passing the ball.

Example 1: Single handed ball control against wall using left and right hands
Description:
Hand /eye coordination using the wall
- right and left hands
- Starting position 3ft from wall
- feet hips distance apart facing the wall
- ball held in the palm of hand
Movement of ball
- flick the ball against the wall using finger tips
- make an arc from top to bottom and back again in one movement
- as ball comes back to the top, use both hands to push the ball to the wall
- after 4 double handed pushes, swap hands and repeat the arc on the opposite side
Coaching Points
- keep fingers soft and relaxed
- keep your eye on the ball
- follow through with hand towards the wall

Example 2: Passing and movement (same height)
Description: Aim is to keep the ball moving continuously
- Pass the ball against the wall at a point further down the wall so the ball rebounds at a high point
- Receive the ball with your opposite hand
- pass the ball back to the wall at a higher point so that the ball rebounds off high
- receive the ball with the opposite hand
- Players should be moving from right to left as the ball moves up and down the wall
Coaching Points
- Keep light on your toes so that movement is continuous
- When receiving the ball, keep fingers light and relaxed so you give with the ball as your receive it, this will allow continuous movement of the ball
- Follow through to the spot you want the ball to go to
